Commerce Colleges Are Being Transformed into IT Institutes in Punjab

The Department of Higher Education has launched a project to convert all 85 commerce colleges in Punjab into IT colleges, according to departmental sources. The initiative, first announced in July this year, comes in response to a sharp decline in student interest in commerce, with enrolment at each college dropping to fewer than 100 students.

Officials noted that the government is currently spending Rs 300,000 per commerce student, which has prompted the shift to IT education. This conversion aims to make education more relevant and better equip students for the growing global demand in the IT sector.

Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat confirmed that e-libraries will be set up in Lahore’s IT colleges as part of the plan. He highlighted the project’s goal of positioning Punjab as a competitive player in the international IT industry.
